Energetic Advantages and Disadvantages of Running Shoes

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Adding mass to the feet or shoes increases energetic demand: ~1% for each 100grams added per foot [1,2]. However, several studies indicate that running with lightweight shoes has an equivalent energetic cost as running barefoot (Figure 1). Frederick et al. [3] hypothesized that this could be explained if running barefoot involves a greater “cost of cushioning” which counteracts the energy savings due to eliminating shoe mass. Here, we directly tested Frederick et al.’s hypothesis.

A Comparison of the Energetic Cost of Running in Marathon Racing Shoes
BACKGROUND Reducing the energetic cost of running seems the most feasible path to a sub-2-hour marathon. Footwear mass, cushioning, and bending stiffness each affect the energetic cost of running. Recently, prototype running shoes were developed that combine a new highly compliant and resilient midsole material with a stiff embedded plate. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine if, ...
متن کاملShock attenuation in shoes compared to barefoot: a systematic review
Background The debate over the advantages and disadvantages of barefoot versus shod running has gained momentum recently [1,2] with the retail market aiming to mimic the motion of the foot during barefoot gait[3]. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of articles that compared shock attenuation in the shod condition to barefoot during weight bearing activity in healthy indivi...
متن کاملComparison of Ground Reaction Force Components during Running with Running Shoes and Control Shoes in Individuals with Genu Varum
Introduction: Running poses an essential role in maintaining cardiovascular health. However, it has been demonstrated that 2.5 to 38 injuries per 1,000 hours of running can occur. The purpose of this study was to investigate ground reaction forces components during running with running shoes compared to control shoes in individuals with genu varum. Methods: This study was laboratory and semi-e...
